Travertine, bouclé and rattan in year five

Almost every furniture photograph shows a piece at its best possible moment: unpacked, unlit by real daylight, untouched. The useful question is what it looks like in year five, and the honest answer is that some materials improve and some simply wear.
Here is what to expect from the materials we use most, including the parts that are commonly left out.
Travertine
What it does: travertine is a limestone laid down by mineral springs, and the pitting across its surface is where gas escaped as it formed. Left unpolished it keeps those open pores and a warm mineral tone that a resin substitute cannot reproduce.
Over time: it darkens very slightly with handling, and the pores at the points where a hand naturally rests will deepen in colour first. Most people read this as improvement. No two cuts match, so a pair bought together will not be identical, and that is the material rather than a fault.
The honest downside: travertine is porous and it is not acid resistant. A glass of wine left overnight can mark it, and lemon or vinegar will etch the surface. Do not use it as a coaster and do not clean it with anything acidic. A dry cloth is genuinely all it needs.
The Kanazawa burner and the Milan book holder are both left unpolished for the reasons above.
Bouclé
What it does: bouclé is a looped yarn rather than a flat weave, and the loops are what catch sidelight. It is the reason a cream chair in bouclé reads as textured through the day instead of as one flat block of colour.
Over time: a good bouclé holds its loft. The loops flatten a little where you sit and recover between uses. Texture hides ordinary marks far better than a smooth fabric, which is the practical argument for it in a busy room rather than only an aesthetic one.
The honest downside: loops can be pulled, and a snagged loop in a bouclé is more visible than a snag in a flat weave. Cats and bouclé are a known problem. If you have a cat that uses furniture, this is the material to avoid, and we would rather say so than sell you the Kyoto and have it come back.
Rattan and woven fibre
What it does: woven rattan gives you a surface that changes completely depending on the angle of the light, because the coils turn inward. Morning sidelight and evening lamplight pick out different parts of the same weave.
Over time: it lightens gradually in direct sun and takes on a warmer tone away from it. Handles and edges polish slightly where they are gripped. Both are the material doing what it should.
The honest downside: rattan does not like dry heat or damp. Directly above a radiator it can become brittle over a couple of winters; in a genuinely damp room it can go the other way. Anywhere normal it is fine for years.
The Copenhagen tray and the Helsinki basket are both woven fibre. The tray's wooden handles are set into the sides rather than glued on, which is the join that fails first on cheaper versions.
Oak and solid hardwood
What it does: oak darkens with light and handling. An oak surface near a window will be visibly warmer in tone after two years, and the change is uneven if something has been sitting in one place the whole time.
Over time: that unevenness is either patina or damage depending on your view. Move things around occasionally if you would rather it aged evenly.
The honest downside: solid timber moves with humidity. Small gaps opening and closing seasonally at a joint are normal and not a defect. Engineered board does not move, which is precisely why it is used in some pieces, and where we use it we say so on the product page rather than implying timber.
Hand-glazed ceramic
What it does: a matte speckled glaze reads soft under low light instead of reflecting it straight back, which is why we favour it over gloss for objects that sit near a lamp.
Over time: essentially unchanged. Ceramic is the most stable material here.
The honest downside: colour shifts between batches, sometimes noticeably. If you want the Seto vases to match something bought a year ago, they may not. Buying the pair together is the only way to guarantee they match each other.
The general rule
Materials that change are materials that were alive or were formed slowly: timber, stone, plant fibre, glaze. Materials that stay identical for a decade are usually synthetic, and they do not improve, they simply postpone looking worn until they suddenly do.
We choose for the fifth year rather than the first week, which means accepting that some of what you buy will look different in time. Every listing states what a piece is actually made of, including where an engineered material is the right choice at the price.
