Ottoman bed or divan: what actually fits underneath

Both give you storage under the bed. They give it to you in very different shapes, and the shape is what decides whether the storage actually gets used.

The real difference

A divan has drawers built into the sides of the base. You get two or four compartments, each roughly the size of a deep chest drawer, opening sideways into the room.

An ottoman bed has no drawers at all. The entire base is a single hollow, and the whole mattress platform lifts on gas struts to reach it. What you get is one large volume rather than several small ones.

That single difference drives everything else.

Access

Divan drawers open into the room, so you need clear floor beside the bed to use them. In a room where the bed sits between a wall and a wardrobe, one side of drawers is often unusable in practice. People discover this after delivery.

An ottoman opens upwards. It needs no floor clearance at the sides, only headroom above the bed and enough space to stand at the foot or the side while it is open. In a narrow room that is a meaningful advantage.

The trade-off is frequency. Opening a drawer takes a second. Lifting a mattress platform takes both hands and a clear duvet. An ottoman rewards things you reach for seasonally. A drawer suits things you reach for weekly.

What actually fits

Divan drawers are shallow. Typical internal depth is 15 to 20 cm, which takes folded clothes and bedding but defeats a suitcase.

An ottoman gives you the footprint of the bed and the full height of the base. On our Gothenburg ottoman bed that is a base measuring 157.5 by 203.5 cm, which is where two suitcases, a winter duvet and the spare bedding go without stacking.

The Gothenburg also carries a front drawer on wheels, 86 by 43 by 15 cm, for the things you do reach for weekly. That combination, one large hollow plus one shallow drawer, covers both patterns without asking you to choose.

The gas lift is the part to interrogate

An ottoman lives or dies on its struts. Underpowered ones make the platform heavy to lift and prone to dropping; overpowered ones make it hard to close.

Ask two things. Can it be lifted with one hand, with a mattress on it? And what load is the frame rated to? The Gothenburg is rated to 500 kg and lifts on a hydraulic gas strut in one hand.

Mattress weight matters here. A heavy pocket-sprung mattress asks more of the struts than a foam one. If you already own something substantial, that is worth mentioning before you buy.

Mattress depth and fit

Ottoman bases are usually sized tightly, because a mattress that overhangs interferes with the lid closing. Check the stated mattress size and the maximum depth.

The Gothenburg fits a UK king mattress at 152 by 200 cm, up to 25 cm deep, on a wooden slat base with no box spring required. A 30 cm mattress on a base specified for 25 cm will sit proud and strain the mechanism.

Headboards, and a detail people miss

If the bed sits under a window or a sloped ceiling, check the headboard height before ordering, not after. The Gothenburg headboard adjusts through two levels, from 95 to 104 cm to the top, so it can line up with a 25 cm mattress or sit proud of it.

The other detail: an ottoman needs the room to open. If the foot of the bed is a metre from a wardrobe, you will still be fine. If a radiator sits directly above the headboard, measure.

Which to choose

• Choose a divan if you have clear floor on both sides, want daily access, and mostly store folded clothes.
• Choose an ottoman if the room is tight, if you need to store bulky items, or if what goes under the bed is seasonal rather than daily.

Both are storage. Only one of them takes a suitcase.
