One idea, carried at full size. A disc of fine radial flutes, pierced through the middle, holding a narrow plank of a tabletop above a flat plinth. From the front it reads as a single carved object rather than a table with legs, and the opening through the centre keeps a hallway feeling open instead of blocked.
The flutes are what make it work. They run the full circumference of the disc, so raking daylight turns the face into a set of fine vertical shadows that move through the day, and lamplight does the same thing more slowly at night. It is the piece people stop and put a hand on as they walk past.
